If you have a backyard and an outside patio you will most probably own a barbecue grill. During summer, the barbecue grill is one of the most important cooking instruments. It's mans territory, no woman is allowed to even try to grill meat. It must have something to do with our cavemen ancestry that is satisfied by cooking meat on an open flame.
Just having to smell the meat sizzling on the coals is enough to make anyone hungry.
There is a large variety of size and shapes of barbecue grills. Small grills that can be placed on a table can cost very little and they work just the same as the big ones.
You will find large stainless steel models that cost over two thousand dollars. The basic function of a barbecue grill is to cook meat. Everything else that is built into one is either a cooking aid or nice to have accessories. Some grills can also smoke meat, with a specialized smoker accessory.
A grill should always be purchased with your particular needs in mind, and not just because it's the latest and greatest. Something to consider when shopping for a grill is: What size grill will fit into and function in your available area? There are so many sizes available, from ones that can take two pieces of meat, to larger ones that can cater for an entire party of guests.
You can cook any kind of meat on a barbecue grill, from chicken, beef, and pork, to even fish. There are ways that can enhance the flavors. One way is to marinate the meat overnight in whatever one chooses. I bet when you put a properly marinated steak on a barbecue, your mouth is already watering.
You can also add different flavorings to the meat on the grill. A quick visit to the grocery store and you can get more flavorings than you could ever use. Some even mix spices together designed for each type of meat.
Watch out for flare-ups because they can singe and ruin the meat. Every barbecue grill has a lid. When cooking meat that drips often, keeping the lid closed while cooking will stop the flare up.
One still has to keep an eye out for trouble, but with the barbecue grill lid down, flare ups are minimized. It's important to know how long to cook a particular kind of meat to the tenderness that you desire. Overcook it and you'll be chewing on a piece of burnt charcoal.
Keep a sharp knife ready to check how cooked the meat is. When you have an idea of the time needed to cook the meat to your requirements, half the worries is gone. Overcooked meat doesn't only look aweful, it tastes bad as well.
